Bekah Burket: Graduate Student Seminar speaker

Bekah Burket

We are proud to present Bekah Burket as our next Baylor University WISE Graduate Student Seminar Speaker. Bekah is a PhD Candidate working with Dr. Bryan Brooks in the Department of Environmental Science here at Baylor University. Her talk is entitled “What does it mean if the medicines we take end up in wildlife?”

Summary: If you’ve ever taken medicine for a headache or antibiotics for a sinus infection, then you know how useful pharmaceuticals can be, but have you ever wondered where the medicine your body doesn’t absorb ends up? Many of these pharmaceuticals and personal care products end up in rivers, and eventually in fish, clams, and other wildlife. There are a lot of unknowns, particularly for clams and mussels. How quickly do they take in the medicine? Why are the medicines in clams different than fish? Is it bad for us if we eat them? Answering these questions is critical to our understanding of risk for organisms that are already struggling to survive.
