Jamie Kim: Graduate Student Seminar speaker

Jamie Kim

We are proud to present Jamie Kim as our next Baylor University WISE Graduate Student Seminar Speaker. Jamie is a PhD Candidate working with Dr. Elyssia Gallagher in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry here at Baylor University. Her talk is entitled “A novel method to characterize the 3D structure of carbohydrates.”

Summary: Carbohydrates are crucial component of life that dictate and mark protein function, immune responses, and disease progression. However, study of carbohydrates is rather limited because of their heterogeneous and flexible nature. We are developing a method to elucidate the three-dimensional structure of carbohydrates using a time-dependent reaction called hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX). The biggest challenge of HDX in studying carbohydrates is that they have rapid exchange rates that fall in the micro-second to milli-second range; thus, our main interest is zooming in on the rapid exchange window by targeting multiple time points. Once this method is established, we will be able to better understand the activities and involvement of carbohydrates in numerous cellular biology.
